Fieldwork first. Everything else follows from what the cameras show us.
Our work spans camera-trap surveys, distribution mapping, collaboration with local communities and conservation partners, and outreach and education initiatives, all aimed at understanding and protecting Pakistan's small wild cats.

Camera-trap surveys
Motion-triggered cameras deployed across wetlands, scrub, and mountain habitat to confirm presence, distribution, and behaviour of small wild cats.

Distribution research
Mapping how far fishing cats range along the Indus canal network, extending known distribution into Sindh and Balochistan.

Collaboration with local communities
Working closely with farmers, fishers, and local partners to document sightings, dispel myths about livestock predation, and encourage community-led conservation efforts.

Community outreach & education
Engaging schools and local communities through awareness sessions, educational activities, and outreach programmes to inspire support for Pakistan's small wild cats and their habitats.
How the project grew
From one species to eight.
2021
Project founded
Launched as a partner project of the Fishing Cat Working Group (now the Fishing Cat Conservation Alliance), to test the belief that fishing cats were extinct in Pakistan.
2021
First confirmed photographs
Motion-triggered cameras captured fishing cats at Haleji Lake Wildlife Sanctuary in May 2021, with support from the Sindh Wildlife Department.

Survey work expands
Field visits extended north to Keenjhar Lake and into Kirthar National Park, documenting jungle cats, Asiatic wildcats, and the elusive caracal.

Eight-species mandate
What began as a single-species search grew into a study of threats facing eight small wild cat species across Sindh, Punjab, and Balochistan.
